'ANZAC MEMORIAL'
Stone Cast & Bronze, 10m high Joondalup, Perth. 1996
IRISH ANZACS
Inscribed with the words :
'Those only deserve freedom, who are prepared to defend it'
This Memorial, while essentially speaking for all who sacrificed themselves for the concept of freedom, has links of special Irish significance.
Erected in Joondaloop Park, it has been adopted as the place each year, where the Irish Anzacs are commemorated by Irish West Australians.
The major feature is a symbolic stella, a cenotaph to commemorate the fallen, through which the rising sun shines, at the break of dawn, on Anzac Day each year, as the Last Post is played and the silent people gather to remember.
A bronze sculpture of a boy, lays a Poppy on the Cenotaph He is a living link between Ireland and Australia, his four grandparents, all who served in World War 11, of Anglo Irish Australian heritage and also a great uncle who died on the beaches of Gallipoli on Anzac Day.
He is the embodiment of hope for peace in the World through the understanding of all Cultures and Creeds and faith in a bright future we see shining in the innocent eyes of our children.
