Background:

This sculpture forms part of the Burswood Park Heritage Trail and commemorates a major segment of West Australian history.


His Royal Highness Prince Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands visited Perth as the special guest of the Government of Western Australia. The Crown Prince was invited to attend the Tri-centennial celebration of the European naming of the Swan River and Rottnest Island by Dutch explorer and navigator, Willem de Vlamingh. The sculpture of “ Willem de Vlamingh and the Black Swan” was part of the commemorative ceremonies and dedicated in Burswood Park, Perth, by His Royal Highness on January 12th 1997.
