Title: "An Gorta Mór" - The West Australian Irish Famine Memorial
Memorial to the Great Irish Famine 1845 - 52.

Project Specification:


The project consists of the following:

  • A Centrepiece Bronze Sculpture: “Uaigneas” mounted on a granite base, trimmed with a bronze Celtic Knotwork motif and a bronze dedication plaque.

  • This sculpture is set in a Celtic Spiral Labyrinth composed of green and red polished granite ‘meditation paths’ with the Famine Prayer inlaid into the surface.

  • The Celtic Spiral Labyrinth is formed with two contrasting colours of granite: Green Granite for Ireland and Red Granite for Australia.

  • The Famine Prayer is inlaid with polished black granite into the red granite path.

  • The granite is 20mm thick with a polished top surface and has been professionally laid to falls onto an 8 meter diameter reinforced concrete disc to engineering specifications.

  • A painted steel Didactic Interpretive Panel has been installed on the west side of the Memorial.

  •  2 No. in-ground lights are set into the granite base of the bronze sculpture.
