Title :Memorial to the Migrant Children"

A Commemorative Sculpture to the Migrant Children
Joan Walsh-Smith & Charles Smith

Location:Fremantle Maritime Museum. WA 2005

Commission: Department of Community Development. WA

Size: Life-size- Boy 11 years old- Girl 6 years old.

Material: Silicon Bronze- choice of material based on longevity of sculpture.
i.e. highest quality art-casting bronze

 

Purpose:
This commemorative sculpture is to honour the memory and the contribution to Western Australian Society and history, of former child migrants.


The establishment of the Memorial was part of 33 recommendations contained in the 2001 Senate Community Affairs Committee Inquiry into Child Migration scheme:
” Lost innocence- righting the Record.”

 

Unveiling: the memorial was unveiled on Human Rights Day, 10th December 2005 by the Minister of Community Development.


The unveiling of the memorial was before an audience of child migrant family members and many dignitaries, organisations and interested citizens.
